football is on fabled stories. it turns out that parts of te'o's fable are flat out fiction. the heisman nominee inspired his campus by playing through pain and heartbreak after the death of his grandmother and hours later the death of his girlfriend, a stanford graduate he supposedly met online and spoke to over the phone. now we know that girlfriend never even existed. this morning te'o and notre dame say he was a victim of a very cruel prank. a prank that may be linked to one of te'o's friends. monte francis has new details on this one. he joins us live at stanford university where te'o supposedly thought his fake girlfriend attended. the questions remain. is this just a very, mean joke or a savvy scheme by a star athlete trying to get attention? >> reporter: that is the big question. there are several strange developments in this story this

morning. i can tell you officials here at stanford say there's no record of a student by the name of lennay kekua. we were able to talk to the managing sports editor for the campus newspaper, the stanford daily, this morning. he wrote a column expressing his surprise and his dismay that he and so many others in the media did not fact check this story earlier. "the new york times" first connected stanford to the name lennay kekua back in october. miles smith is a senior at stanford and interested to hear what te'o has to say later today and that he has doubts about te'o's innocence in this. had he heard the stanford connection earlier, he would have checked it out. >> a little upset. if someone told me te'o's girlfriend is a stanford grad. i would say absolutely not. tragic car accident. student that dies from leukemia and she's a girlfriend of te'o who every time stanford played

notre dame i would have wanted to write an article about that because it would be a great story. >> reporter: another strange twist. our sister station in los angeles is reporting there could be a connection to a friend in palmdale and may be implicated in the hoax. they are making attempts to contact the friend along with members of his family. and just when you thought the story couldn't get anymore bizarre, someone claiming to be the girlfriend who now everyone knows never existed started sending tweets last night saying that te'o would address the myths related to their relationship today. everyone is interested to know what te'o has to say about this when he addresses the media later on today. live in palo alto, monte francis, "today in the bay." the weather is still chilly this morning. you know what? it will get warmer today. we can look forward to that as we give you a live look at the south bay. that's san jose. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren.

now this morning the national discussion is turning local as the city of san jose considers a controversial gun proposal of its own. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of the san jose police department. the plan is to force assault weapon owners to store their guns right there at that building behind you. good morning. >> reporter: you are correct. good morning to you. this is a plan that would not fly with all gun owners who might see this as an infringement on second amendment rights. this is just a proposal being put forward by a private attorney near in san jose. what he's proposing is that owners of assault weapons here in san jose would have to register their weapons and have them stored here at police headquarters. they would have to provide a reasonable explanation as to why they would want to take their guns out of police storage and would have to let officers know when they plan to return. assault weapon owners would have to submit to a background check to verify they are mentally fit, nonviolent and haven't committed

a gun crime. a violation of the law would be a misdemeanor leading to a $1,000 fine and possibly six months in jail. smith formally submitted his proposal yesterday to the city's rules and open government committee. the council members did table discussion until next wednesday's meeting because mayor chuck reid is out of town in washington, d.c. for the conference of mayors meeting. the mayor did express reservations about smith's plan saying that regulations of assault weapons should be handled by the federal government. mar marla, reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." school safety is a key issue in los gatos. families there would like to keep their children safe and secure on campus. more than 100 parents showing up in los gatos last night just a month after that sandy hook tragedy. school leaders say prevention now is priority number one. some of the suggestions include putting up gates and fences, surveillance cameras, and entry

locks at key points wouaround t school. parents are confident changes will come. >> i feel very confident. i think just the fact that they are having this meeting shows that they recognize how important it is and how important it is to the parents and for the parents to be involved. >> coming up on monday, february 4th, los gatos town council will hold a special study session to discuss whether it can change town code to restrict future firearm sales. the opening of a new gun sporting store in town has caused debate and protests. a new sketch out of a suspect who nearly ripped a girl out of her mom's arms in san jose. the man tried to snatch the girl in her own front lawn at a home in east san jose. the mom was able to wrestle her free and run back inside with her to call police. the mom says the man smelled

like car oil. another sketch to show you. police in milpitas warning the public about this man who they say tried to kidnap a 3-year-old boy. this happened back on january 6th inside the great mall. the boy's mother says that man took her son by the hand and simply started walking away with him. luckily she was there paying close attention and quickly caught up and got her son back. warning about a contagious flu bug has more than 100 students set home from school in lafayette. health experts now say the norovirus may be to blame for the outbreak at burton valley elementary school. county health officials say it's the largest case so far this year. last year almost 30 schools in contra costa county reported similar cases. it is 6:09. coming up, revealing reviews of local restaurants. we'll tell you how yelp is taking its ratings a step further in san francisco just ahead. unlimited iphone deal from

welcome back. it is 6:12 right now. time for a quick check on the day's top stories. algerian officials say a total of 20 hostages have escaped from a natural gas plant in the sierra desert where they were being held by islamist militants. we can also tell you some of those people that escaped were american. the algerian military is in a standoff with the captors right now. at least 20 others are still being held hostage. new this morning, the ioc stripping lance armstrong of his bronze medal from the 2000 sidney olympics because of his

involvement in doping. officials close to the decision say the committee sent a letter to armstrong asking him to return that medal. armstrong's interview with oprah in which he reportedly admits to doping is scheduled to air tonight. sports world buzzing about monti te'o. a tweet says everything will be explained at noon today. it's not clear this morning whether te'o knew his online love wasn't a real person. >> scott mcgrew says fake people are all over the internet. >> a huge problem for internet companies. not just fake nigerian bankers looking for money or fake girlfriends but entire fake accounts on services like facebook where more than 80 million accounts may not be real people. that's facebook's own estimates. that's the population of egypt. fake profiles are a problem.

they mislead twiadvertisers int thinking people are paying more attention to products than they are. you remember last week we were talking about a new offer from walmart. iphone 5 unlimited data service for 45 bucks a month. some bloggers say unlimited data not so unlimited. they are running into data slowdowns once they go above 2 gigabytes a month. no comment from walmart this morning. shares in hewlett packard trading higher after talks other businesses may be interested in buying parts of hp. two companies hp overpaid for. if hp were to sell, it would be for a much lower price. that would be embarrassing and reason enough not to sell really. that and hp hopes to make money through those acquisitions. hewlett packard opened a new executive briefing center on its campus. executive meg whitman there to cut the ribbon was not made available to the press.

there are no briefings at the executive briefing center. you'll soon be able to see a restaurant's health score when you check it out on yelp. christie smith early for her reservation south of market. city of san francisco working with yelp on this project. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. a restaurant score is on the san francisco health department website. in fact i just went and looked on it. the problem is that it's not that easy to find. you have to click on it. get into the data base and put the name of the restaurant in and you get the idea. it's much easier the way it is now. they are putting that score on the yelp website page. it's on the restaurant profile for any san francisco restaurant starting today. you click on it and it takes you to a second page with date and type of inspection and number and details of the violations if there are any and yelp is hoping what this might do is help raise the bar on food quality here in the city but for the restaurant industry, it's really about keeping the scores in perspective. for instance epic road house on

embarcadero has a perfect score but the owner worries about this. >> i believe that the restaurant should be given an opportunity to be able to fix those things. the ability to get a rereview or to get a reevaluation, the timing is never going to be very quick. >> reporter: now yelpers and foodies say that the more information they have the better. 90 or better is a low-risk establishment. 70 or less is probably meaning that multiple violations and high risk. any city can sign up to do this. new york and philly are on board but san francisco is first and it's a good idea. you are less likely to run into sour grapes. the inspector went down there and gave a score. reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith. back to you. >> thank you very much. san francisco has been leading the way in the effort to make that sort of government data not only easily assessable but

we do have fog to contend with up in the north bay. you have pockets where you can only see for half a mile. give yourself extra time. could see freezing fog over bridges and overpasses. 39 degrees in san francisco to start. at 28 degrees over the golden gate bridge into novato and that's the coldest spot. the north bay as per usual nothing but 30s to show you south of the golden gate bridge. 34 degrees in san jose this morning. 30 in gilroy. improvement there as well. high pressure is now firmly in control of our weather pattern. you can see the clearing around that big ridge. it's keeping the cloud cover out of the bay area and overnight all that heat just raid adiateso the atmosphere. isolated 20s this morning. not as cold as it has been. the good news is the rebound we get to enjoy every afternoon with temperatures climbing into the mid 60s. we do want to point out it's a spare the air day. 65 in santa theresa.

65 in gilroy. a dry january so far. you don't have to think back to far to remember how wet december was. as a result we're still getting some choice ski conditions. this is your toyota tahoe report and squaw is looking good. 38 degrees. if you are headed to tahoe this weekend to squaw, they have five to six feet of powder at the base. you want to bring your sunscreen because as you know that snow reflects the sun's rays. we expect a lot of sunshine thursday into friday temperatures in the upper 30s. you may make it a ski weekend. if not, make it a beach weekend in the bay area. temperatures at the beach like santa cruz climbing to 70 degrees. half moon bay to 68 degrees on saturday and sunday. we'll get nice conditions for both the beach and skiing. got to love california. let's check your drive with mike. >> keeping options open. thanks. interstate 80 open as well.

no chain requirements. track us and track the website before you head out there. looking over here to the bay bridge. much better news for interstate 80 and the earlier disabled pickup truck that cleared the bridge but the backup formed, and meatering lights turned on and they are starting to recover. we have the pushback into 580 and east shore freeway so a slower approach from the maze to the bay bridge. starting to recover over the span itself. further south this ripple effect may affect folks approaching the bridge. castro valley y has seen a heavier flow of traffic. typical pattern through the tri-vall tri-valley. as we look at the san mateo bridge, a smooth drive. the live camera shows you westbound commute not really looking any different than your typical day but we may see a few more cars just a few as folks do try to avoid the bay bridge. the backup is there.

the incident has cleared. a look at the peninsula where some of these folks from 92 end up south through palo alto approaching willow to the north or university to the south and nice easy drive for both 101 and 280 between the city and south bay. south bay checking here. northbound commute routes are looking normal with burst over here. 101 at 680. 280 shows blips from 280 and up into cupertino. i'll continue to track that for you. a special shout-out to 237. a tough day yesterday because of a series of crashes. clear morning so far. i hope i don't jinx it. i'll knock on wood behind the magic map. we'll also look at the commute from fremont into the area in the next report. it's looking good. back to you. >> i'm glad it didn't fall down. >> the magic map makes him magic mike. >> it's a morning show, jon. 6:22. coming up, some precious metal gets the vip treatment.

thank you for joining us. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. 20 foreigners have escaped after being held from islamic militants inside a natural gas plant deep inside the sierra desert. americans and europeans are among those who were able to escape. islamist militants initially said seven americans were among the 41 people they were holding hostage. the militants say they are holdi holding hostages. india and europe now the latest to ground all dreamliner aircraft after a series of problems on planes worldwide. the problems include a battery fire and fuel leaks.

u.s. officials and a boeing engineer are due in japan on friday. they will help in the investigation into an ana dreamliner forced to land when the cockpit filled with smoke. it may have been caused by a battery that overheated. you see the evacuation that followed there. japan and u.s. have grounded all dreamliner aircraft including the nonstop service that just started last week in san jose. for more, let's check in with "today in the bay's" tracie potts live in washington, d.c. this morning. tracie, good morning. my first question is, how long will the planes be grounded? >> reporter: we're not sure. we have four countries, u.s., europe, together several countries there along with japan and india who have grounded the fleet. the manufacturer of this lithium ion battery that may be at the heart of things say it could be months to investigate because they don't know if it's the battery or wiring system in the plane so they have to take

everything apart. >> san jose national airport where we are right now launched dreamliner service last friday. in fact, former transportation secretary norman maneta where the airport is named after was on that inaugural flight. a pr nightmare. boeing shares are down. everything is going wrong. do you think this is something that boeing can overcome? >> it's a good question. the markets are rocked by this. they have orders for 800 of these planes. this was supposed to be the lighter fuel efficient new model of this jetliner. boeing only filled 50 of the 800 orders. they planned to double production from five to ten a week. now it looks like they are basically on hold with everything and they are losing over a million dollars a day until this is solved. >> we've been reporting these problems for the last couple weeks. why do you think the faa waited until now to act? >> it's a good question. after the incident yesterday following the one last week,

they had to take a closer look at this hours before transportation secretary ray lahood said the 787 was safe and he would fly on it himself and shortly after that the faa said the planes are grounded in the u.s. keep in mind only united is currently flying these planes based out of the u.s. of course. we have ana flying them into the u.s. based in the u.s. it's only united u.s. based carrier that has six of them and now on the ground while everyone tries to figure out what's going on here. >> we are of course going to stay on this story. thanks so much for insight. we are also watching water out there. a live look at san francisco. if you have been out or just been listening to us, it's chilly. crisp out there right now. we can also tell you not going to be as cold as yesterday. why do we know this? because christina loren tells us. mother nature smiling on us once again. >> we're back in her good

graces. a live look at the sun making an appearance here over san jose. we'll check on your drive. that's picking up with mike in just a moment. temperatures are not as frigid as they have been. mildest start all week. we're in upper 20s in novato. 39 to start you out in san francisco. across the bay bridge in oakland this morning also upper 30s for you. 30 degrees in gilroy. so there's improvement there. you have been in the 20s every single other morning this week. this is all we expect for today. low to mid 60s. spare the air day. keep that in mind. through your friday, temperatures are going to be closer to 70 degrees in warmest spots across the bay which are in the south bay. into your weekend, 70s possible at the beaches. let's take you through your hour by hour detail for this thursday. by noon we'll transition from heavy coat weather at 8:00 a.m. to sweater weather and by 4:00 p.m. you can actually get by with some short sleeves out there enjoy that sunshine. soak it up. we'll see changes as we get into this weekend even warmer days ahead. i'll detail that your seven-day

forecast in my next report. let's detail the drive as promised. here's mike. >> we have had a tough problem for the upper deck after a flat tire for a pickup truck transpired into a lane being backed up for a half hour and this backup forming early at the toll plaza. we see the toll plaza itself moving smoothly but then getting into the area it slows down the east shore freeway with folks heading there. typical pattern through berkeley into emeryville. at the berkeley curve, heavier flow of traffic. west 580 commute direction out of oakland and off of 24 really jamming up. it's that ripple. when something happens at the toll plaza it ripples back into the maze and the approach. that's the immediate effect toward the bay bridge. here's a plus/minus situation. a minus. negative for the folks heading toward the san mateo bridge. you may see more company as we have seen early slowing south out of san leandro down toward hayward and approach to the toll plaza. castro valley y heading into

oakland, that may be lighter as folks try to adjust their route because of a backup at the toll plaza. i say stick on the typical pattern and you'll be okay. allow extra time. 580 and 680 slowing south out of pleasanton and into sunol as that continues build. we'll see how things are shaping up for san jose. rush is on. we'll show you a wider view coming up. we could find out if the newest casino gets to open the penthouse gaming floor. the san jose chief will step down on friday and will make a decision about the eighth floor before he leaves office. the penthouse is designed to offer high stakes gambling and a panoramic view of silicon valley. the chief expressed concerns over the casino's ability to safely monitor activity on that top floor. it's 6:37 right now. still ahead, a movie theater reopens opening deep painful

this is actually the mildest start to the day that we've had all week long. temperatures are actually more mild this morning. we have certainly more 30s than 20s and that will continue to take place. we'll get warmer and warmer each morning through the weekend. high pressure builds in for the next couple days. by the weekend temperatures are going to peak on saturday at 72 degrees in santa cruz. you might want to go to the beach and sit out there close to those waves. we highly encourage you do not do so. high surf advisory in place and waves big enough to prompt the mavericks. it's not. that competition taking place on sunday. we have a megastorm system. some people referring to in the meteorological community as a storm bomb in the eastern pacific. it's not impacting anybody only shipping interests out there. but what's happening is it's driving in these really large swells. we want you to stay out of the water even though conditions are going to be perfect at the beach this weekend. it all works out like this. here's your time line on

toward university avenue. the bay bridge upper deck had early problems and now again calm as far as flow of traffic. we do have slowing going on west 580 on the approach. it has started to smooth out. a live look at the same area. it gets confusing here. this is east shore freeway heading west. commute direction around the bend. that's berkeley curve. over here is 580. look at the slowing over here as you approach the merge. this is interstate 80. this is 580. interstate 880 coming over here all blending over toward the bay bridge toll plaza out of the maze. you see the maze of roadways and toll plaza. that's why the action happens over here. it's moving smoothly right now. that's better news after the early problems for the bay bridge. we'll look at the maps again and we'll show you the area on the approach coming through oakland and 580 typical drive through those areas. we look at the castro valley y with slowing. this looks like winter pattern kicking in for 238. tri-valley has a typical pattern that we've seen over the last

few months. more folks heading through sunol and a new fender-bender along the grade. location either north or south from chp coming up. hope to have that for you. looks like it might be northbound. look at that slowing showing up on sensors there. the san mateo bridge is smooth but the toll plaza is starting to back up. in the south bay there's your northbound routes looking slow. reminder that lady gaga is performing tonight. you may find people walking around in distracting kocostume tonight. back to you. this morning oakland police releasing a sketch of a man who attacked a woman and tried to drag her away from the b.a.r.t. station in oakland. oakland police say the 25-year-old woman did manage to fight off her attacker and escape back on december 17th. the suspect who was last seen driving off in a black sedan that had tinted windows. the man accused of killing two teenage girls in oakland last november are expected to return to court today.

diantay powell and antonio edwards are facing charges for shooting death of bobbie sartain and raquel gerstel. prosecutors say the girls described as best friends were gunned down in oakland on the morning of november 25th. the suspects are expected to enter their pleas today. new this morning, we are now hearing from leaders of fremont's washington hospital after it suddenly cut hundreds of jobs. in a statement released to nbc bay area, the hospital says it has been hit hard by the economy and says it had to eliminate unfilled positions and order voluntary retirements and resignations before laying off 200 employees. some are questioning whether the cuts are legal because they reportedly took place behind closed doors. washington hospital does get funds from property taxes meaning it must follow the very same public meeting laws as a city council. the board of pilot commissioners will meet this morning for the first time since the tanker crashed into the bay

bridge. the board's agenda does not include the crash but board members could talk about that january 7th incident. it was foggy when the tanker sideswiped one of the towers of the bay bridge. there are reports that faulty navigation equipment could have led to the crash. this morning's meeting takes place in san francisco at 9:30. this next one is a huge international story. shares of boeing under pressure again today as the grounding of the 787s continue. >> as of this morning every single dreamliner in the world is barred from flying. >> there are 15 of them and with the exception of the test 787s in the seattle area, none of them flying. boeing shares are down this morning about another 2%. we watched the dow actually rise a bit though boeing is a dow component. yelp is a feature this morning where you can look up a restaurant's health rating. as with many things it is

launching first in san francisco. christie smith a few blocks away from yelp headquarters. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. this information has always been there on the san francisco health department's website but what you have to do is go online and click on the data base, type in the name of the restaurant, and even san francisco mayor ed lee say it's not that easy. what they set up now is much easier. that's because all of that same information is on yelp. the san francisco restaurant reviews. the inspection score given by the health department is right there. you click on it and that will give you the date and the type of inspection. the number and details of the violations if there were any recorded. yelp is hoping to raise the bar on food quality in the city. and make the information more transparent. that's what the city is hoping and for foodies and yelpers they are saying the more information they have the better. >> it's good that you know the
